Your drains do a ton for you daily, and it’s time to repay them this Valentine’s Day. Our expert plumbers at Hedrick’s Service Now are providing our top tips to keep your plumbing system happy and healthy.

Know what shouldn’t go down the drains

For many homeowners, annoying clogs are the bane of their existence. Trust us; your drains don’t enjoy them either! Fortunately, the solution to this problem is quite simple: avoid putting these items down the drain.

In the kitchen:

  • Fats, oils, and grease may seem safe for your drains, but they will harden inside and become clogged.

  • Fibrous foods such as celery, eggshells, potato skin are difficult to grind up and will get stuck in your garbage disposal.

  • Hard foods, including animal bones, fruit pits, and seafood shells, cannot be adequately processed.

  • Rice and pasta expand in water, which makes them more susceptible to catch in your drain and get stuck.

In the bathroom:

  • Anything except toilet paper and human waste. Yes, that even includes flushable wipes. Despite its name, you should not flush them down, as they can back up your toilet.

Protect your drains

Before a hairy monster threatens to ruin your shower, purchase drain catchers to defeat them. They’re cheap and effective at catching hair or items that don’t belong down your drains. While you’re at the store, get some for your kitchen sink too!

Clean your drains the RIGHT way

As a plumber, one of our biggest enemies is chemical drain cleaners. While the harsh ingredients will eat away at that stubborn clog, nothing is safe from its destructive path, and your pipes are its next target. Your pipes will eventually corrode and become so damaged that they’re irreparable. That is why we offer BioOne, a safe and natural alternative that effectively reduces organic buildup and residue. You can also try the tried-and-true method: baking soda and vinegar.

Hedrick’s Service Now is here to help you with all your plumbing needs every day of the year, including Valentine’s Day. Check out all our plumbing services, and call (214) 509-6029 to get started today!
